Local leaders raise concerns about federal identification of West‑Side warehouse as potential detention site

During the Jan. 22 meeting, Salt Lake County leaders informed the Wasatch Front Regional Council about preliminary information that a distribution warehouse on the West Side near the airport had been identified by a federal outreach intermediary as one of several potential facilities for use as a large detention site.

A county official told the council that the warehouse is not zoned for habitation, that the building lacks adequate plumbing and support infrastructure for large numbers of people, and that the area’s wastewater system and pump stations would not have capacity for thousands of occupants without substantial upgrades. The official said they had learned the site was one of seven nationwide under consideration and that the reported potential capacity figure was about 7,500 people. "You can imagine the scope and scale," the speaker said, noting concerns about humanitarian implications and impacts on nearby businesses.

Officials said they did not yet know where the process might lead and indicated local governments and WFRC would follow developments. Council members asked technical questions about infrastructure capacity and urged coordination among city, county and state agencies as more information becomes available.

WFRC did not take formal action but members noted the issue would likely require further discussion and coordination with local and state partners.
