Jefferson County commissioners voted to raise the Adequate Facilities Tax by 10% — an increase of 10 cents on the dollar amount per square foot charged on new construction — in a 16–2 roll call.
Mayor and staff explained the statutory constraints and timing: the county may increase the fee every four years by up to 10% and state legislative actions under consideration could affect eligibility for certain counties. Commissioners were told that, even if approved tonight, the change requires two consecutive regular meetings and a two‑thirds vote to take effect.
Supporters said the modest increase helps the county collect funds tied to new development and growth so schools and infrastructure can keep pace with construction. One commissioner noted the change could raise the current fee to $1.10 per square foot if enacted and observed that developer payments on new homes have historically contributed to local infrastructure funding.
Opponents expressed concern about legislative uncertainty and the timing of any reassessment but the motion carried. The commission noted the earliest practical effective date would be in July if procedural steps are met.
The commission will take the required second vote at the next regular meeting before the increase can be enacted.
