Alan Schlemmer, a candidate for the governing board of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West, said he is running to help "preserve, protect, and prepare" the community as it grows older. He said he is currently serving a one-year appointed term and was previously elected three years earlier.
Schlemmer framed his run as a continuation of local stewardship. "I am an absolute fan of life here in Sun City West," he said, noting he and his wife moved to the community 15 years ago and participate in many clubs and activities. He highlighted the community's recreation centers, golf courses and pools as assets he wants to maintain.
Schlemmer recounted that during his first year on the governing board he was struck by a vehicle while bicycling and was unable to complete that term because of his recovery. He referenced the community's origins, saying Del Webb and John Meeker set out in 1978 to establish a "gold standard" for retirement communities, and argued the current board must take steps to uphold that standard for a 45-year-old community.
He closed by asking for residents' support in his campaign and thanking listeners.
The statement was a brief candidate address; no motions, votes or formal board actions were taken during this recording.
