Chad Jones, Supervisor of Assessments, briefed the Ways and Means Committee on Jan. 26 about the office’s preparations for the 2026 assessment cycle and renewal mailings.
Jones said the office will mail 2026 exemption-renewal forms next week, including forms for the senior-citizen assessment freeze, which has no substantive changes for this year. He explained that although the office lists an October application deadline on the form so staff can run reports in November and send reminders, in practice the office accepts timely renewals through the end of the year.
Jones also noted the office is required to include information about the separate tax-deferral program (administered by the treasurer’s office) on the exemption form and cautioned there is a narrow window to apply for tax deferral. He said final decision letters will go out at the end of the week as staff prepare the abstract to submit to the state following board-review decisions.
Jones invited questions and said staff are available to help residents understand timelines and application requirements.
