Student board representatives raised concerns at the Jan. 26 Faribault Public Schools meeting that reports of immigration enforcement activity have contributed to lower attendance and anxiety among students.
Amira Williams described recent student activities and broader engagement, then fellow student representative Tay Ali told the board she has noticed “fewer students coming to school because of ICE agents being seen in our community and around our schools.” Ali said staff told her a protocol exists for such situations but that students had not been informed of what it says or what will happen if agents are nearby. She asked whether the board or administration could develop policies or measures to ensure student safety and consistent attendance.
Board members acknowledged the report and emphasized safety and calm. Director Robichaud and Director Moore thanked staff for maintaining safety during student protests and stressed the need for measured, fact-based discussion. Moore also linked the topic to broader community issues and urged critical thinking in classroom conversations. No formal action was taken at the meeting on the student request; board members said administration should be engaged early on any proposed protocols and that information should be circulated to trustees and the community.
The board did not provide specific data on how much attendance has fallen nor did staff state a public version of any protocol during the meeting. Student representatives and board members asked for clearer communication so students understand what procedures are in place.
