Oshkosh committee hears preview of wheelchair-accessible trackless train, donor funding and proposed fare changes

Committee member Carl briefed the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee on a proposed trackless-train purchase the City Council expected to consider at its next meeting.

Carl said the new trackless train is wheelchair-accessible and allows riders to "roll into the back of the caboose," and that it includes speakers in each car to support docent-led tours. He said the bulk of funding for the train will come from a donor through the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, easing the direct burden on city funds.

The committee discussed proposed ticketing ideas mentioned during a project workshop: increasing the single-ride price from about $1.50 to $3 to help sustain the service, offering a capped family price (suggested example: $10 per family), and discounted punch cards for frequent users. Carl said the city favored options to keep the attraction affordable while ensuring long-term sustainability.

The project was presented as both a mobility-access upgrade and a potential new tourist amenity; committee members did not take a formal vote during the meeting and expected the item to go before city council.
