Oliver County commissioners voted to adopt a revised inclement-weather policy that adds the road superintendent to the list of officials involved in closure and travel-advisory decisions and clarifies how state alerts and local reports will be used.
Staff described how the Bismarck District road-report iPad and state alerts feed into county decisions and said the sheriff 27s office can override state postings when local conditions differ. The policy establishes guidelines for notifying employees, suggested a 10 a.m. reassessment on storm days, and instructs staff to formalize how essential workers are compensated when the courthouse is closed.
"I get alerts from the state throughout the day 24/7," said Speaker 5, summarizing the notification process and the need for clear written guidelines. The board discussed compensating essential road and law-enforcement workers with "storm pay" and additional vacation hours or comp time and asked staff to spell out the payroll treatment to avoid confusion.
The board approved the inclement-weather policy by voice vote and asked staff to prepare written procedures for holiday pay, comp time and an extra-hours bonus policy for the road superintendent for future action.
