Shawnee public works outlines 260-mile sidewalk network and barriers to expansion

Public Works Director Kevin Manning presented an overview of Shawnee’s citywide sidewalk program during the Jan. 26 meeting. Manning said the city currently maintains about 260 miles of sidewalks and described standard widths for sidewalks and shared youth paths.

Manning outlined three primary methods used to add sidewalks across Shawnee and reviewed the challenges the city encounters when constructing new sidewalks, including right-of-way constraints, utility conflicts and funding limitations. The presentation focused on program standards and implementation approaches rather than announcing new funding or policy changes.

Next steps: Council did not take action on this item; staff will continue to develop sidewalk project priorities and funding strategies.
