The City Council voted to allocate two unused City Days to an Eagle Aviation aviation and STEM expo slated for December, after debate over whether the resolution should obligate the city to underwrite event operational costs.
The event organizer described an established aviation‑STEM program that has run in Miramar and Broward County and said the Homestead event would include a school day and a community day, robotics competitions and workforce development exhibits. The organizer also said the foundation will award local scholarships: two $1,000 awards to Homestead high‑school seniors and future scholarship commitments tied to the event.
Several council members opposed a resolution clause that directed the city manager to cover all normal event expenses, including police, traffic control and sanitation. The council removed that clause and approved the allocation of the two days without an open‑ended city cost commitment. "We're dedicating two days that we had no intention of using; we're not committing a blank check," one council member said during the debate.
The motion passed on a unanimous roll call. The sponsor and staff will continue planning and work with city staff to identify any resource gaps and potential sponsorships.
