Votes at a glance: council approves licenses, procurement, election items and several annexations

The Tuscaloosa City Council on Aug. 8 approved a series of routine actions across licensing, procurement, personnel and election administration, and carried multiple annexations into the city limits. Two outstanding condemnation items were moved to allow property owners time to complete repairs.

Key outcomes

- Demolition hearings tabled for 90 days: The council tabled demolition proceedings for structures at 2018 Dinah Washington Avenue and 2722 22nd Street to allow owners or representatives additional time to pursue repairs. (Motions to table 90 days carried.)

- Liquor license approved: Council approved an ABC restaurant retail liquor license for Logan’s Roadhouse Enterprises LLC (Logan’s Roadhouse No. 318) at 1511 Skyland Boulevard East after TPD reported no objections and an applicant representative spoke.

- Special-events licenses approved: The council approved a slate of less-than-seven-day special-events retail licenses for Downtown Entertainment LLC covering multiple dates and venues from February through May.

- Appointment of acting police chief: Council concurred with the appointment of Cboe Sanders as acting chief of police.

- Procurement and contracts: Council approved multiple purchases and contract amendments, including actions with Taylor Electrical Contractors Inc., McGifford and Associates LLC, Valbridge Property Advisors, Appraisal and Consultant Group Inc., Hatch Company, Norport Electrical Supply, Morrow Water Technologies, Motorola Solutions and other routine public-works and equipment contracts.

- Budget and finance: The council authorized a reimbursement resolution and established the budget for the 2026 B warrant series. Council also approved payment of bills presented for the period.

- Election administration and special election: Council appointed personnel to assist the absentee election manager for the 2026 special municipal election, set qualification fees and poll hours, established compensation for municipal election workers and called a special election to fill the District 3 council seat.

- Annexations: The council approved annexations including ~0.6 acres at 5300 McRites Ferry Road, ~2.9 acres at 10197 Watermelon Road and ~4.5 acres covering parcels on Hargrove Road East and 34th Avenue East.

- Tuscaloosa Tennis Center: Council authorized the mayor to explore operational options for the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center; the motion carried with one recorded 'No' vote.

What to watch next: Most items approved were routine contracts, purchases or procedural election steps; the Springbrook development item was tabled indefinitely after public comment and will require reintroduction for future consideration.
