Brevard Commission signals support for Palm Bay's push to acquire segment of St. John's Heritage Parkway

Brevard County commissioners voted to direct staff to prepare a modified, non-contractual resolution showing county support for Palm Bay's planned acquisition of an eastern segment of the St. John's Heritage Parkway.

Staff explained the Parkway is a regionally significant east-west corridor intended to improve mobility, evacuation capacity and reduce congestion on parallel arterials. Palm Bay adopted a resolution at its meeting and a private party, Rolling Meadows Ranch, indicated it would provide financial backing for any acquisition or imminent-domain action.

Because the property lies within Palm Bay's jurisdiction, staff told commissioners the city could proceed without county approval. The county resolution would be a show of solidarity, not a binding agreement. After a public speaker from the Friends of the Parkway urged support, commissioners moved to have staff prepare the resolution and to authorize the chair to sign it when ready. The motion carried.

Commissioners emphasized regional benefits including evacuation planning and potential benefits to future school siting. Staff will draft the non-contractual resolution for the chair's signature if the board approves the final language.
