Woodford County Fiscal Court considered a request from the county for indigent-burial assistance that exceeded the typical $500 payment the court authorizes for such cases.
Judge Executive described the county's usual policy of obtaining three quotes and paying up to $500 depending on quotes, but said the current case’s total cost exceeded that amount and might justify additional funds.
"Normally, that's a cremation amount, and we get quotes and we get it taken care of in that way," Judge Executive said, describing how staff try to reduce costs. After discussion, the court approved a contingent increase to $750, subject to required approvals and documentation, and authorized payment by reimbursement if contingencies are met.
Squire Lyles Taylor noted there is pending legislation in Frankfort seeking to expand county flexibility for indigent‑burial eligibility and cremation authority. Magistrates expressed support for compassion while also noting the need for a formal policy review.
Next steps: the court will process the contingent $750 payment if the required approvals are met and may review county policy on indigent-burial assistance in light of recurring cases and potential state legislative changes.
