Edinburg CISD enrollment dips by 910 students from last year, district tracks reasons

The district reported total enrollment of 32,536 as of Jan. 23, 2026, a decline of 910 students compared with the same date last year. Elementary enrollment totaled 16,299 (down 483), middle school enrollment was 6,513 (down 125) and high school totaled 9,724 (down 302). Staff noted six additional graduates since the last board meeting, contributing marginally to the decline.

The enrollment presenter said staff track withdrawal reasons. Recent common reasons include families moving out of state, an increase in homeschooling and transfers to nearby charter or district programs. The presenter said campuses should conduct exit interviews when possible to capture reasons for departure; if a student enrolls in another Texas district, that district reports the student and the home district updates records accordingly.

Trustees suggested exploring programs other districts use — for example, home‑based or virtual programs that allow homeschooled students to remain affiliated with a district campus for services and support. Administration said several districts are piloting such programs and staff can research options for the board.
