City staff provided a brief public art update at the Jan. 26 Lauderhill City Commission meeting, reporting roughly $300,000 in cumulative public art funds (year‑to‑date) and summarizing recent installations and projects.
The presentation noted completed and ongoing installations including a West Wind Park piece, murals at St. George Park and West Kenlock Park, a historic photograph installation at Fire Station 30, ELPAC sculptures, and a transformed fountain at Wally Alpers Park. A utility‑box wrap program has covered nine boxes and two additional locations featuring youth‑council artwork are proposed pending county approvals.
The public art board has three seated members of a seven‑member body, leaving four vacancies and preventing a quorum; staff said the board should meet monthly but has not been able to do so because it lacks members. Commissioners asked about funding sources and were told a percentage of building permit fees is earmarked for public art and those funds roll over year to year. Staff indicated that the commission must approve expenditures even when the board makes recommendations.
What’s next: The city clerk will advise commissioners about appointment processes; staff and the public arts consultant will return with additional details and the consultant was invited to a future meeting to answer outstanding questions.
