The Romulus City Council on Jan. 26 approved a package of economic-development and service agreements, authorizing a recycling contract and adopting two resolutions related to redevelopment and tax-increment financing.
The council authorized the mayor and clerk to enter a one-year contract with Midwest Recycling for clothing and shoe drop boxes around the city, with language allowing up to five additional one‑year renewals by mutual agreement. Council members asked about bin locations and maintenance; the mayor and administration said bins would be placed at multiple sites (including DPW, City Hall and points near Saint John’s Lodge) and emphasized the contractor’s responsibility to maintain them. Councilmember Wadsworth raised concerns about overfilling and upkeep during deployment.
Separately, the council consented to establishment of a Local Development Finance Authority by Aerotropolis Development Corporation to support redevelopment along Ecorse Road, a measure the mayor said had been discussed at an earlier special meeting. The council also adopted an amendment to the development plan and the TIF (tax increment financing) plan for the city’s Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA). Those resolutions were presented as steps to facilitate redevelopment and coordinate local incentives with adjacent jurisdictions.
All three items were approved by motions on the agenda; roll-call votes were recorded and the motions carried. The council did not specify additional public financing amounts at the meeting; each action directs staff to complete the administrative steps and return any required documentation to the clerk.
