Cleveland council adopts state�mandated wildland-urban interface code

ClevelandTown Council on Jan. 8 adopted changes to the townordinance to align with House Bill 48, which updates state requirements for wildland-urban interface (WUI) property and construction standards.

Council staff explained that the state revised WUI rules to address wildfire risk and that municipalities must integrate the updated building-code standards into local ordinances. Staff noted there will be training on the changes in the coming week to help local fire, planning and building officials comply.

Council members asked procedural questions but did not propose amendments to the language the state required. A council member moved to integrate the WUI changes into the town code; the motion was seconded and the council approved the measure by voice vote.

The change means property owners and builders in Cleveland will need to meet the revised WUI standards when planning new construction or significant remodels in applicable areas. Staff said they will circulate the state guidance and training dates to council members and local contractors.

The councilidentified the adoption as compliance with state law; no implementation deadline beyond the state requirement was set at the meeting. The councilminutes list the item as adopted and staff will return with documentation and next steps at a future meeting.
