The Senate Committee on Military, Veterans Affairs, Space and Domestic Security on Jan. 27 reported favorably on SB1656 to designate the SS American Victory as Florida's official state flagship.
Senator Burgess described the SS American Victory as a World War II merchant vessel built in 1945 that served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and that today operates as a museum in Tampa that hosts more than 30,000 visitors annually. "The SS American Victory is one of only four operational World War II merchant vessels left in the country," the sponsor told the committee and noted it has been recognized as a National Historic Place since 2002.
During questions, the sponsor told the committee there is "no known fiscal impact" to naming the ship the state flagship, and said the vessel is in good condition aside from routine painting and upkeep. Committee members offered collegial remarks and the bill was reported favorably by roll call.
Why it matters: Designating a state flagship is largely symbolic, but supporters argued the designation would honor maritime heritage and could boost tourism for the Tampa Bay region.
Next steps: SB1656 was reported favorably and will proceed to the next legislative stages.
