The House Commerce & Economic Development Committee met for a short organizational session in which Chair Rep. Doreen Gallegos introduced members and staff, reviewed committee procedures and announced the committee’s hearing schedule for Wednesday. Committee assistant Patrick Follance said members will receive amendments, committee substitutes and agendas in advance.
The meeting centered on administrative items rather than policy debate. Patrick Follance told the panel that four bills are scheduled for Wednesday: House Bill 27 (which already has a committee substitute distributed), House Bill 96, House Bill 103 and House Bill 138. He said staff will circulate the relevant documents and that members’ legislative assistants will also receive copies.
Gallegos emphasized procedural expectations for the session, asking members to provide analysts with sufficient time to review proposed amendments so staff can "flag anything that they might see" and to raise problems early. She said rules typically tighten in the final part of the session and that the committee will follow last session’s timing rules for amendments.
The chair announced two dinners at the Coyote Cafe: a Feb. 2 event intended to honor staff and a members-only dinner on the 28th hosted by the beverage association. Gallegos said she particularly hoped members would attend the Feb. 2 dinner to show appreciation for staff who often work late.
Members offered brief introductory remarks about their districts and backgrounds. Rep. Gail Armstrong called it the "Best committee ever," reflecting the light, collegial tone of the meeting. No formal motions or votes were recorded; Gallegos adjourned the session until Wednesday when the committee will begin hearings on the listed bills.
Next steps: the committee will convene Wednesday to hear the four scheduled bills; members should expect to receive committee substitutes, amendments and agendas from staff beforehand.
