The Prince William–Manassas Regional Jail Board voted to submit a fiscal‑year 2023 budget request to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors to fund hazard pay for sworn employees of the adult detention center.
In a resolution presented by a board member, the board said the detention center employs approximately 350.4 full‑time equivalent sworn staff (348 full time and 4 part time) and described correctional work as inherently dangerous. The proposal would provide $3,000 per year for each full‑time sworn employee and $1,800 per year for part‑time sworn employees, with a stated total annual cost of $1,051,200.
Proponents said the hazard pay program would assist recruitment and retention in a competitive labor market. During the meeting the board noted the county budget process is underway and agreed to submit the request for consideration by county supervisors.
On roll call the board recorded unanimous support for the motion; members indicated they will work with county staff in the budget process to press for funding.
The resolution will be included in the board’s FY23 budget submission to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors; the jail board’s staff and the superintendent said they will continue to advocate for the request during county budget deliberations.
