Senate committee advances DHS extension as commissioner defends TANF spending

The Senate Government Operations Committee unanimously moved SB1517 — extending the Department of Human Services — to the calendar after Commissioner Clarence Carter provided an update on the department's work under the TANF Opportunity Act and its financial management.

Carter said the state is concluding five years of work under the TANF Opportunity Act and will issue a final report in December. "When I got here, five years ago, our unexpected balance was at $740,000,000," Carter said, and reported that the department has since committed most of those funds to projects with a continuing $191,000,000 annual federal TANF allocation serving as the statutory base for programs.

Committee members praised program innovation and oversight; the motion to advance SB1517 passed by unanimous voice vote (nine ayes).
