Beaufort County Animal Services is advising residents on how to handle found kittens and is promoting adoption and volunteer opportunities, the broadcast said.
The program urged residents who find a litter to observe from a distance for several hours to see if the mother returns; if the kittens appear clean, warm and fed, it said, it is usually safest to leave them with their mother until they are weaned (about eight weeks). If the mother does not return or the kittens are cold, dirty, crying or in danger, the broadcast advised intervening, keeping them warm and contacting a local shelter or rescue for guidance before bringing neonatal animals to a shelter.
The broadcast promoted dog adoptions at Beaufort County Animal Services (adoptions include vaccinations, microchipping and spay/neuter) and outlined a new Running Partner Program that pairs runners with shelter dogs for exercise and increased visibility to boost adoption prospects. Contact information given was (843) 255-5010 and shelter@bcgov.net; adoption listings are available at pitstopdogs.com/adopt-a-dog.
The segment framed fostering and volunteer opportunities as ways residents can support local animal welfare.
