Lawrence County board approves routine consent items and teacher tenures

The Lawrence County Board of Education opened its first regular meeting of the year, established a quorum and approved a slate of routine agenda items, including teacher tenure recommendations and several budget and infrastructure items.

Chairman Daniel moved the tenure approval to follow consent items so teachers could be recognized in person; Marsha Johnson, director of human resources, presented the list of tenure candidates and the board approved the recommendations by voice vote (motion carried). "All candidates and their principals were invited tonight's meeting," Johnson said as she presented names for board consideration.

The board also approved an executive-committee recommendation to authorize Lawrence County High School to proceed with payment of gatekeepers (roll-call result: 7 yes, motion carries), accepted a school nutrition equipment purchase funded from food-services balance, and approved an IT licensing item described as necessary for campus Wi‑Fi and Chromebook access. The board voted by roll call on multiple items and confirmed motions carried.

Board members approved policy revisions (policy 1.901 and 4.602) after packet review and took a motion to adopt the spring sports schedule from the packet. Chairman Daniel concluded the meeting by asking IT staff to provide an update on network security and remediation at the next meeting following prior hacking incidents.

The meeting adjourned after routine business was completed. The board did not receive any public-comment speakers that evening.
