Perry City on Jan. 22 adopted a resolution authorizing the city to participate in America250 Utah and to form a local committee to plan activities tied to the 250th anniversary observance.
Staff told the council the America250 initiative is being organized from the national level to the state and county, and that counties and cities that register can apply for a small grant (staff cited $1,500). The resolution creates a committee subject to open-meetings requirements; staff noted an intention to fold America250 activities into Perry’s existing Fourth of July programming rather than create a long-term standing body.
Council members asked how committee volunteers would be selected, whether the city would be bound to statewide "signature programs," and whether committee work would obligate the city financially. One council member suggested adding language clarifying that any partnership or activities would be at the council’s discretion and subject to budget constraints; staff said they would try to include a dissolution date for the committee so it automatically terminates after the anniversary.
Council approved the resolution on a roll-call vote. Staff next steps identified during the meeting included sending a copy of the resolution to the county/state to complete registration, advertising for volunteer committee members in the city newsletter, and returning committee appointments and proposed activities to the council as needed. Staff also said open-meetings training for the new committee is expected (training referenced for Feb. 26).
