The Sunset City Council voted on Jan. 20 to adopt Resolution 2026‑05, supporting America250 Utah and creating a Sunset City America250 community committee to plan local bicentennial activities.
Mayor Scott Wiggle said the city will appoint a staff representative (Sarah Markle), a citizen representative (Bob Smalling) and a council representative (Council member Ridley), and will seek participation from local groups including the Riveting Rosie group. Council member Carlson moved to adopt the resolution; Council member Thompson seconded and the resolution passed by roll call.
Separately, the council considered a memorandum of understanding to accept a $1,500 stipend from the state for America250 activities. Council members asked for clarity about the stipend's parameters and whether the toolkit specifies allowed uses and advertising requirements. Staff said a toolkit is available and that allotted funds must incorporate America250 branding and official materials. Council member Smalling moved to approve the MOU and Council member Carlson seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote.
Council members noted they will coordinate the committee's work with existing events such as Fundays and will return with program details and any required reporting once the committee meets.
