During the public comment period at the Jan. 20 meeting, two residents addressed the council.
John Adkins (who identified himself as Martin Verdegas County Sheriff and a long‑time Davis County resident) said he will visit city councils while campaigning for sheriff and outlined five priorities including child protection, being firm on crime, protecting constitutional rights, increasing transparency and focusing on AI/cyber issues. Adkins invited council members to continue the conversation after the meeting.
Ben Maxfield described a dismissed traffic citation for an improper right turn on Main Street and requested council assistance in resolving a disagreement with the chief of police over the interpretation of Utah code 41‑6a‑801. Maxfield said the statute's language for right turns does not specify which right‑hand lane a driver must enter and suggested the chief instruct officers not to issue citations in similar circumstances; he noted his case was dismissed by the Sunset City Justice Court but said the chief planned to continue citations based on a narrower interpretation.
Council members thanked both speakers and noted the matter could be scheduled for a future agenda item if Maxfield wanted a fuller review.
