The City Commission on Jan. 21 approved a resolution "supporting the people of Iran and condemning the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps," following several commissioners’ remarks about violence and human rights abuses in Iran. The motion to approve was made, seconded and carried 4‑0 on a recorded roll call.
Vice Mayor Lazaro spoke at length about the situation in Iran, citing reports of protesters killed and describing what he said were systematic attacks on protesters, including claims about hospital shootings; he framed the resolution as an expression of support for Iranians seeking freedom and an opposition to state violence. Mayor Joy Cooper and other commissioners also expressed support and said the resolution would be shared publicly.
The resolution was adopted by unanimous vote; no enforcement action or fiscal impact was associated with the measure as recorded in the meeting.
