After extended discussion on Jan. 20 about a proposed electric-scooter ordinance, the Oakley City Council agreed by consensus to pursue education and training before adopting formal restrictions.
Councilors raised concerns about enforcement, the classification of scooters under state law, age limits, and unsafe riding near schools. Multiple council members urged that youth receive training in schools and that the city conduct outreach explaining potential future ordinance provisions. One council member called the ordinance "the hammer," and several colleagues favored beginning with a less punitive approach.
The council directed staff and the police chief to develop a training and outreach plan, asked to involve school officials, and tentatively scheduled further consideration of an ordinance in April. No ordinance was adopted on Jan. 20; the action taken was to prioritize education and return with a proposed plan.
