George P. King Jr. was elected chair of the Framingham City Council at its Jan. 1, 2026 reorganizational meeting after a contested nomination and vote.
The reorganization followed a period of nominations and speeches by multiple candidates. Councilor Leora Malik laid out a platform of transparency and structured agenda planning, saying she would “work to move us forward, work collaboratively with the administration, with the school committee, with SYFA, with city staff and residents to get things done in a respectful, welcoming, and engaging process.” Councilor John Stefanini also addressed the body, saying he was committed to “provide for active listening, meaningful collaboration, [and] bold action to ensure progress for our city.”
After nominations were opened, closed, and temporarily reopened, the council took individual roll-call votes for the three nominated candidates. The presiding officer explained guidance from the state ethics commission that nominees for chair should not vote for themselves because the chair’s stipend differs from that of other councilors. The chair then announced the tally: five votes for George P. King Jr., two votes for John Stefanini and two votes for Leora Malik; abstentions were recorded where members followed the ethics guidance. The chair declared King elected.
Members then moved to elect King by acclamation to demonstrate unity. The council administered the oath of office; an official leading the swearing said the oath and King repeated it, pledging to “faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as council chair to the best of my abilities.”
Councilors framed the vote in the context of the city’s recent governance challenges and an upcoming difficult budget cycle. Several speakers urged the council to move past division and focus on operational improvements, while others cautioned against rushed or opaque decision-making.
The council’s reorganization concluded with the chair opening nominations for vice chair and continuing other organizational business for the new term.
