The Framingham City Council voted to adopt existing council rules on a temporary basis for 30 days and authorized the chair to appoint a temporary rules committee to draft permanent rules.
A councilor moved to modify the original 60-day proposal to a 30-day interim period, citing the accelerated budget process and the need to act sooner. The amended motion also empowered the chair to appoint a temporary rules committee and to immediately form a five-member finance committee; the chair said the finance committee must organize for a meeting on Jan. 12.
Councilors discussed the timing in the context of an accelerated budget calendar. One councilor urged that the shorter interim period would allow the council to operate under known rules while a rules committee develops recommendations. The motion, amended to include creation of the finance committee, passed and members were invited to sign up to serve on the temporary committees.
The council also handled seat assignments and added the 2026 meeting calendar to future action items, deferring final calendar adoption to a later meeting to allow members time to review.
