The Brentwood Union Free School District Board of Education recognized four community members Thursday as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, presenting certificates and inviting recipients to pose for photos with the board.
The board and a speaker identified as Wanda introduced honorees Apollo LaGrandiere; Ginny (Reyes/Redis), a Brentwood graduate and longtime youth sports volunteer who founded a cheerleading and football nonprofit; Maria Teresa Romero, an immigrant from Ecuador who founded Latina Sisters Support Inc. and is a breast cancer survivor and advocate; and Robert Lee Martinez, a Brentwood High School graduate active in community outreach and intergovernmental relations in Suffolk County. The district said certificates “honor your invaluable contributions to the traditions and culture of the Hispanic community.”
Board members thanked the honorees publicly and invited them to receive certificates and photographs. The recognition was presented near the start of the Sept. 26 business meeting, and the board noted the nominations will be posted with related information on the district website.
The board did not take votes related to the recognitions; they were presented as part of the meeting’s opening agenda.
