Commissioners approve transfer of Martinsville School District fiber to county

The commissioners approved a resolution and agreement to accept ownership of fiber-optic infrastructure the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville proposed to transfer to Morgan County at no charge.

Administrator Kyle told the board the Martinsville school board adopted a resolution (noted in the transcript as resolution 2026-4-83 at their Jan. 15 meeting) and is asking the county to accept the fiber that runs to a tower on Lincoln Hill Road. Commissioners voted to approve the county resolution (recorded in the transcript as resolution 2026-1-20) authorizing acceptance of the fiber transfer and to enter any necessary agreement to receive the infrastructure.

Commissioners did not discuss operational details of future fiber use at length during the meeting; the action establishes county ownership and allows staff to execute the formal agreement to accept the cable at no charge.
