The City of Madison Board of Public Works and Safety approved a series of maintenance and safety contracts at its Jan. 20 meeting, including floor drains for the Crystal Beach pool house, replacement rollers for the Sunrise Golf Course fairway mower and removable decorative bollards on Broadway intended to improve pedestrian and event safety.
Christian Hansen, assistant parks director and superintendent, told the board the Crystal Beach pool house has experienced persistent puddling for two seasons after earlier renovation work removed a planned floor re‑slope. Hansen said staff identified “some drainage issues in the pool house” and proposed installing “somewhere between 12 and 15 floor drains” that will be core‑drilled through the floor and tied into the building’s existing sanitary sewer to reduce trip and slip hazards. The board approved the contract for EJ’s to install the drains and directed staff to complete work before the pool’s opening in May.
On equipment maintenance, Hansen described replacement rollers for the reel fairway mower as a recurring, budgeted repair. The quoted cost (about $5,000) was presented as a cost‑effective alternative to replacing the entire fairway unit, which staff said can cost roughly $80,000. The board approved the purchase so parts can arrive in time for the mowing season.
The board also approved change order number 2 to the Main Street/Community Crossings project to install removable, decorative bollards north and south of both lanes on Broadway and in a mid‑block alley. City staff said the bollards will sit in storage sleeves and be removable with a key for event access; the full change order amount was described as approximately $67,005.10, funded in part by a Jefferson County tourism board grant and Redevelopment Commission (RDC) funds. Presenters said the bollards will improve safety when streets are closed for events while maintaining a historic look.
Board members approved two PACE midpoint payments (221 E. Main and 118 W. 5th) and handled routine agenda items including claims and minutes approval. No roll‑call tallies were recorded in the transcript; items were approved by unanimous voice vote on motions and seconds.
What’s next: staff said the Crystal Beach drains will be scheduled to finish before the pool season, the fairway rollers will be ordered for early arrival, and the removable bollards will be deployed for events as needed. The board will continue coordinating financing and project timelines as state grant cycles and local budgets allow.
