Derry Area superintendent highlights student projects and board appreciation

The superintendent used the meeting to spotlight student activities across the district and to mark Board Member Appreciation Month.

District students from the Eastern Westmoreland Career & Technology Center’s culinary program were invited forward and received certificates of appreciation; presenters praised students’ professional preparation and the quality of food and presentation at a recent joint area board meeting. Superintendent thanked Caitlin Whiteman and the students and noted the district will share a group photo on the district website and PR channels.

Middle‑school students described recent activities including a Deer Valley trip with hands‑on fishing, archery and kayaking; a pie‑auction and bake sale that raised $1,000 for the Derry Area School District Foundation; a canned‑goods drive that produced over 600 items for holiday distribution; and a Parkleberry Fair fundraiser that raised more than $6,400 for seventh‑grade activities.

Superintendent and other board members emphasized the value of real‑world, career‑ready experiences and thanked students, staff and volunteers for their service.
