A Virginia Department of Transportation representative briefed the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors on local transportation updates at the Jan. 20 meeting.
Paul Henson of VDOT told the board the Ferndale River Road roundabout project is in the bidding phase with bids scheduled to close on Jan. 28. He said resurfacing contracts have been let for the year, pre-construction meetings are being scheduled in February and some resurfacing work may begin in early February, weather permitting. Henson also said preliminary engineering is underway for the Reese Road Rural Rustic Project with a goal of beginning construction in spring when conditions allow.
Henson noted VDOT posted Cherry Hill Road at the statutory 35 mph speed limit following state regulations. When a resident raised concern about pervasive potholes, Henson advised that citizens and board members use the VDOT work-order system (via the VDOT online work-order page or by phone) to report road defects; he said once a work order is submitted VDOT is required to investigate and that reported potholes not corrected within 48 hours could create legal exposure.
Henson also said staff are preparing for an expected major snow event and that VDOT crews and county partners are coordinating pre-event preparations. He invited board members to submit questions and offered to follow up with additional details on specific requests.
What happens next: VDOT will evaluate submitted work orders, follow the normal investigation process and update the county when contractors for the roundabout and resurfacing work are identified.
