Council backs resolution asking state legislators to rename Intracoastal Waterway bridge for Elwood T. Brady Jr.

The Terrebonne Parish Council voted unanimously on Jan. 14 to adopt a resolution supporting the renaming of the local Intracoastal Waterway bridge in honor of Elwood T. Brady Jr.

Councilman Danny Babin presented the resolution, saying he and port commission members had discussed the proposal with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the port commission had already forwarded its own resolution to the state legislature. Babin described Brady as a Terrebonne Parish resident and former state representative who helped secure funding for construction of the bridge and served on local boards, and he noted Brady received the Louisiana Cross of Merit for his work during the 1973 Mississippi River flooding.

The resolution states that a copy be forwarded to the state legislative delegation for consideration of renaming the Dulodge (transcribed) Intercoastal/Intracoastal Waterway Bridge to the 'Elwood T. Brady Jr. Bridge' in recognition of his service. The council voted to pass the resolution 9-0.

Next steps: the resolution will be sent to the state legislative delegation for consideration; the council's action is an expression of local support and does not itself rename the bridge at the state level.
