Residents press council for timeline on Salmons Community Center restoration

Several residents used the public‑comment period to urge the City of Temple to prioritize restoration of the Salmons Community Center.

Jerilyn Brown, a regular user of the pool, said she has waited two years for progress and asked whether insurance proceeds from the Texas Municipal League remain earmarked for rebuilding. "I would feel like they have paid off on the claims by now, and I'm hoping that that money remains earmarked for the restoration or rebuilding of Salmons," Brown said.

Another commenter (Balinski) told the council that every council member will eventually be a senior and urged them to prioritize a large, centrally located facility that recreates the camaraderie and program synergies the community center once provided.

The presiding official acknowledged the concern, saying the issue is complicated and that experts have been engaged to evaluate repair versus rebuild options. The official said the cost to rebuild entirely can be equal to repair costs and that staff are working through options to restore the center as quickly as possible, but no firm timeline was provided.

Council did not take action at the meeting; staff indicated the subject is under active discussion and will require further evaluation and planning.
