At the State of the City, Mayor Rex Richardson spotlighted recent private-sector commitments and a new workforce pledge aimed at creating thousands of jobs.
Richardson said VAST reached its five-year hiring goal early and will occupy a 76,000-square-foot facility in Long Beach; he listed other recent investments including a Ford electric vehicle research hub and a $100,000,000 facilities investment by Nikon AM Synergy. Since 2023, the mayor said his GrowLongBeach strategy helped create more than 4,100 jobs.
The mayor announced 'Accelerate by '28,' a public-private partnership with CEOs, major developers and workforce networks intended to create 4,000 additional high-growth jobs over the next three years (bringing the total to about 8,000 jobs by 2028). Richardson said the program will prioritize training Long Beach residents for those roles.
On corporate relocation, Joel Harris, president of Speedo North America, told the audience Speedo chose Long Beach for its permanent North American headquarters and welcomed partnership with the city for LA28. Richardson framed Speedo’s move as consistent with Long Beach’s growing identity as an aerospace and innovation hub.
Ending: The mayor positioned the announcements as part of a deliberate economic strategy to keep businesses and high-paying jobs in Long Beach and to ensure residents are trained to fill those roles.
