The Multnomah County Board voted to refer a five‑year renewal of the county history levy to the May 2026 ballot, keeping the current rate and preserving free admission for county residents to the Oregon Historical Society and four East County history organizations.
Diane McKeel, co‑chair of the levy oversight committee, told the board the levy — first passed in 2010 and renewed in 2016 and 2020 — has supported museum operations and public programs. She said the levy rate would remain the same under the proposed renewal and emphasized citizen oversight: "the levy does not increase taxes," she said, describing free admission for a property assessed at $250,000 as approximately $12.50 annually.
Janice Dilch, co‑chair, outlined the oversight committee’s role in meeting with museum directors at least twice a year to review expenditures and ensure compliance with levy language. Carrie Chymchuk, executive director of the Oregon Historical Society, thanked the board and described the levy’s role in funding exhibitions, education and free access.
Public testimony from Lightning expressed personal support, highlighting how archives and museums can broaden historical understanding. Commissioners praised the levy’s stewardship, urged public outreach ahead of the May ballot, and approved the explanatory statement and ballot title by roll call vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize the explanatory statement and ballot materials for the May 2026 election and prepare outreach materials to inform residents about the renewal.
