San Luis council unanimously designates Javier Vargas as vice mayor

The City Council of San Luis, Arizona, unanimously designated Council Member Javier Vargas as vice mayor after a motion and second during the meeting.

Council members moved quickly to fill a post the council had intended to rotate annually. A council member noted Vargas has served "a little over 3 years" and should have the opportunity to serve as vice mayor before his term ends. The motion to designate Vargas was made, seconded and approved without opposition.

After the vote, the chair asked the newly designated vice mayor to continue the meeting. The newly designated vice mayor thanked colleagues and said, "I will assure you that I'll do my best to represent my city the best way possible." The council then proceeded with the remainder of its agenda.

The designation implements the council's informal practice of rotating the vice mayor position to give members the chance to serve in that role; a separate ordinance considered that would codify an annual December designation was later adopted by the council (see related coverage).
