Council greenlights use of an older deputy chief vehicle for emergency response; ISO and insurance questions remain

The Township of Washington administration told council members on Jan. 8 that the fire department would like to retain an older deputy fire‑chief vehicle for use by a battalion chief rather than auctioning the unit.

Fire Director William Billias and Administrator Mark DeCarlo said the vehicle can transport personnel, haul equipment and tow the rescue boat, and that minimal recent expenses had been incurred (noting only tire replacement in 2025). Officials said operating the vehicle will not require additional 2026 budget funds.

Council members asked whether keeping the vehicle was tied to ISO rating recommendations and how insurance coverage applies if a volunteer or officer uses a personal vehicle to respond. Administration reported it had consulted with an insurance representative; the representative said ISO ratings can affect homeowner insurance and that the township’s liability policy covers personal vehicles when used in response, but members asked for clearer documentation of how ISO impacts local insurance premiums.

Council did not require additional funding for the vehicle at this time and said the administration will monitor its condition and report back if replacement becomes necessary.
