The House of Representatives convened for a routine session on Jan. 14, opening with a prayer led by Representative Robert Johnson of Adams and a pledge of allegiance, followed by introductions of pages and visiting judges, students and officials.
Representative Robert Johnson opened the day with a prayer asking members to "guide our steps when the path is unclear and grant us the discernment to choose what is right, not merely what is easy." Shortly thereafter the chamber dispensed with the reading of the journal after a motion from the gentleman from Rankin, Representative Powell; the speaker declared, "The ayes have it."
Members heard a series of introductions and recognitions: head page Anders S. Stewart presented the junior pages for the week; Dr. Avni Patel was introduced as the doctor of the day and identified as founder and CEO of Mississippi Psychiatry and Wellness; and delegations and individual guests from several counties and schools were welcomed into the galleries.
On the calendar, the gentleman from Montgomery, Mr. Oliver, moved to take up Item 1, to reconsider, and to table it. No member sought recognition in opposition and the chair announced the motion carried. The clerk later announced schedules for committee and budget hearings, including Appropriations subcommittees and Medicaid hearings, with specific times and rooms listed.
The session included brief ceremonial remarks and a light exchange recognizing visiting musician Bobby Russ. Members also observed a moment of remembrance for the late Mary Frances Dent Terry, who served in the House in 1974–75 and died Jan. 14, 2026.
Before adjournment, a motion was made that the House stand adjourned until 2 p.m. the following day; members approved the motion and the speaker closed the day's session. The House resumes at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
