Board approves thousands of library acquisitions; staff reiterate 30‑day review process

Conroe ISD trustees on Jan. 20 approved the district’s list of September–November library acquisitions after staff confirmed the materials had completed the district’s public‑access review period and meet required ISBN standards.

Karen Garza and assistant director Mindy Harding told the board the list spans many titles and that the process includes a 30‑day public review before materials come forward for board approval. Harding told trustees she did not have an exact count during the meeting but that “there are thousands of books on this list” reflecting the multi‑month acquisition window.

Trustees asked routine questions about vetting and policy compliance; staff said the materials align with recently adopted local policy and state ISBN requirements. The board approved the list by unanimous vote (7–0).

Earlier in the meeting members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and other community donors presented a gift of Texas history books for elementary schools. Public comment included advocates urging retention of certain titles and residents describing concerns about content or accuracy. Separately, later in the meeting the board took action on a written challenge to one specific title (I Am Billie Jean King) after closed‑session review and granted that challenge; the library‑acquisitions vote and the subsequent closed‑session book‑challenge outcome were separate actions taken at the same meeting.

District staff said they will continue to follow the established public‑access review process and will communicate updates to campuses and parents as needed.
