Jefferson County commissioners opened their meeting by flagging a potentially severe ice event and moved to address an immediate facility failure at a senior center.
An opening speaker told the commission that some forecasts showed “up to a half inch of ice,” warning that “a tenth of an inch of ice causes major problems.” The commission discussed sheltering plans and local supports, with staff and community partners already preparing warming locations and meal service.
“Cold weather hurts. Ice kills,” an elected official said in the meeting as commissioners urged vigilance and offered to coordinate county resources for residents who lose heat or power.
County staff raised a separate but related concern: an HVAC failure at the Fairfield Senior Center. A county representative said the center’s HVAC “is totally out,” and that staff had “move[d] the seniors to the gym because it was cold in the area where they normally need” (as reported at the meeting). The commission voted to place emergency HVAC repair for Fairfield Senior Center on the agenda as new business so funding and repair could be addressed at the next available stage.
Commissioners and staff emphasized community coordination if the predicted ice materializes, noting churches and local shelters were already preparing to receive residents who lose heating. The meeting record shows the commission approved the agenda addition by voice vote and directed county staff to follow up on repair options and potential funding sources.
Next steps: the commission placed the Fairfield Senior Center HVAC repair on the agenda for formal consideration and requested staff to prepare cost and funding details for the next meeting.
