County marks Martin Luther King Jr. with awards, speakers and community recognitions

The Board of Supervisors recessed its agenda for a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration that included a land and labor acknowledgment, invocation, choir performance and presentations of humanitarian awards.

Elena Velasquez, a Richmond youth active in environmental and community service programs, received the student humanitarian award and spoke about youth civic engagement. The adult humanitarian award named for Federal Glover was accepted by family members on behalf of Pledge to Humanity founder Gabby Gorbani, who was not present; her son Giovanni read remarks. Alex Walker Griffin delivered the keynote, connecting Dr. King’s legacy to local acts of service and civic responsibility.

Supervisors thanked organizers and volunteers and noted the event’s theme, “Democracy as a verb,” while the program included acknowledgements of community partners, honorees and a call to continued civic engagement.

What happens next: the board resumed its regular meeting after the presentations and returned to business items.
