Cold and frozen equipment halt evacuation at Zaporizhzhia horse farm amid shelling

The program said roughly 250 horses were evacuated earlier but about 98 animals remained on site because horse transporters and roads were immobilized by ice and anti-drone barriers.

Farm staff described tasks to keep animals alive in freezing temperatures: melting water, bedding stalls with fresh straw, and sheltering smaller horses with their mothers. A stable worker named Vasiliy demonstrated efforts to keep animals warm and ensure they have water, while a former employee named Valeriy said he did not want to leave his home despite the risks.

The report framed the farm’s difficulties as part of the larger humanitarian and logistical challenges in frontline areas, with staff improvising shelter and feeding measures while awaiting the resumption of safe transport.
