On Jan. 15, 2026 the Columbus Historic Resources Commission continued a code-violation certificate-of-appropriateness regarding an installed ornate metal security door at an Oakwood Avenue property (COA 2501309699) after the applicant did not appear in the hearing.
HPO staff described the case as a code violation resulting from a heavy ornate metal security grille that had been installed without prior approval. Staff said they were "not supportive of the current security door" and recommended the applicant either install a full-light storm door that permits viewing of the entry door or match the size and location of the storm door to the entry door glass; staff recommended approval conditioned on removal of the security door and submission of manufacturer information for staff review.
Because the applicant was absent, commissioners agreed to continue the case to provide one more opportunity for the applicant to submit a compliant product or to communicate with staff and revise the application; staff noted that if the applicant communicates and revises the application, the matter could be handled via staff approval rather than a full hearing. The commission moved and passed a continuance for the item.
Next steps: the applicant should contact HPO staff, submit manufacturer information for a compliant full-light storm door if they choose that route, or revise the application; if no communication occurs by the next hearing the commission may table the case.
