Council accepts city attorney resignation, authorizes interim appointment and begins recruitment

The council on Jan. 15 formally accepted City Attorney David Margolis’s resignation, effective Feb. 9, and authorized steps to fill the position on an interim and then permanent basis.

Mayor (unnamed) said the resignation should be ratified so the city can open the position for recruitment. Councilmembers discussed a compound motion to accept the resignation and appoint an interim. The record shows council members referenced "Owen" as the interim candidate and staff later referenced "Mr. Kohler" in connection with drafting or amending an employment letter; council authorized the necessary actions to make an interim appointment effective in early February.

HR Director Tiffany Macros told council staff had reached out to four recruitment agencies (three had responded with the fourth due imminently) and expected to provide council materials on a quick turnaround. Councilmembers discussed scheduling a special meeting to address the search process and cited options for either a quick interim appointment tonight or bringing a formal employment letter back at the next meeting.

Council voted to accept the resignation and move forward with the interim appointment and recruitment steps; the motion passed. Staff said they would return with proposed employment documentation and additional information to formalize the interim appointment and the recruitment agreement.
