The school committee considered a set of policy updates recommended by the policy subcommittee and voted to move substantive drafts forward for public input while placing minor, non‑substantive edits on the consent agenda.
Committee members outlined the package: grammatical and language updates for several policies (to be adopted via consent), and a suite of new or revised policies requiring two‑week public comment and first reading: gifts and solicitation (explicitly prohibiting staff‑run raffles and games of chance under state law), personnel use of technology (including social media expectations for staff), professional teacher status, assignments and transfers, evaluation and the suspension/dismissal process, and support‑staff policies on positions, contracts, compensation and evaluation.
Policy counsel and administrators said many of the new entries formalize existing statutory or contract‑based obligations so administrators, union leadership and principals have clear, accessible guidance. The committee polled individually and approved the first readings and revisions as recommended; the motion passed 4–0. The consent agenda (which included the non‑substantive policy edits, accepted gifts and routine items) was moved and approved 4–0 as well.
Committee members said they will solicit two weeks of public input for the new policies and return any feedback before final adoption.
