A memorial foundation in Torrance City marked 20 years since the death of a local woman named Allison and described its continuing scholarship program for West High senior women.
The foundation, organized as a 501(c)(3), selects two scholarship recipients from West High’s senior class each year based on three criteria—academics, athletics and community service. "We set up a 5 0 1 c 3 charitable organization to remember Allison, to honor her and remember her," said Speaker 4, who identified herself in the meeting as Allison’s mother.
The board awards two grants each cycle, one for $2,000 a year for four years and another for $1,000 a year for four years, Speaker 5 said. A past recipient, identified as Speaker 2, described the award’s impact: "It just goes directly to my tuition, so it's really a big help in, like, paying off school expenses and tuition like that." The foundation’s board reviews applications from the senior class at West High to determine the recipients.
Speakers at the event recalled Allison’s life and connection to the school’s athletic program. Speaker 6, who has coaching ties to West High soccer, said Allison played soccer from age 5 and served as team captain in her senior year. "This is going into my twelfth year. Head coaching, I would, in a sense, get to help her live on through the program," Speaker 6 said, noting Allison’s jersey remains on display.
Speakers described Allison’s death as resulting from a drunk-driving crash 20 years ago, which prompted friends and family to establish the scholarship. Family members emphasized her kindness and community service as the traits the awards are intended to honor.
The foundation thanked Torrance City for its support and said it expects to continue selecting and supporting scholarship recipients in future years. No formal votes or city actions were recorded in the transcript; the discussion was a series of personal remarks, testimony and program details.
