Board finds district in compliance on community‑treatment policy, sets monitoring follow‑up on safety

The Mercer Island School District board on Monday found the superintendent in compliance with the district’s operational expectation on appropriate treatment of community members, but asked for further monitoring on student safety and related benchmarks.

During discussion, several board members acknowledged both the district’s recent efforts and lingering community concerns. One director proposed noting compliance while also recording that "this is still something that we are working on" and scheduling a follow‑up in six months so the board can review data from the Presidian review, student safety surveys and other metrics.

Board members and district staff debated whether to postpone a formal determination until the Presidian investigation and committee work are complete. District leadership recommended taking a compliance vote now and returning with a partial, data‑driven report at the midyear check‑in. One board member said they would "vote to be in compliance with that reasonable interpretation this evening," and the motion to find compliance passed with the board calling the vote in the affirmative.

The board also asked staff to prepare a level‑2 monitoring report that will include multiple data points — student safety surveys, the healthy youth survey results, Presidian findings and operational evidence from campuses — for a midyear update. The board will revisit the issue in about six months to assess progress and any outstanding community concerns.
